Common questions
M1 says "Magnetometer unavailable" or shows no readings
Switch M1 off and on again with the Start button, or tap Retry sensor. If it persists, close other apps that use the compass, take the phone out of a magnetic case, and keep it still through the calibration. Every iPhone has a magnetometer; a case with a magnetic ring or a MagSafe accessory sits right on top of it and can swamp the reading.
The readings jump when I pick the phone up
That is expected: M1 measures the field at the phone, and moving the phone through the Earth's field changes it. Put the phone down, wait for the calibration to finish, and compare periods with the phone in the same place. The in-app guide (ⓘ on each instrument) explains the baseline rule step by step.
Which thermometers work?
Any Bluetooth LE thermometer that broadcasts its reading (Govee H5075/H5072/H5074, Xiaomi LYWSD03MMC with ATC or pvvx firmware, SwitchBot Meter) or exposes the standard Environmental Sensing or Health Thermometer service. Tap the Thermometer chip, then Nearby Bluetooth devices to see everything the scan hears; if your model is listed but not read, send me its name and manufacturer bytes and I'll add the packet format.
My Xiaomi Mi Temperature and Humidity Monitor 2 isn't read
This is the LYWSD03MMC. On Xiaomi's own firmware it encrypts its readings with a key tied to your Mi Home account, so it shows up under Nearby Bluetooth devices as data FE95 but is never read. Flash the free pvvx firmware once; it takes about ten minutes, and the sensor keeps working on its own afterwards. You need a desktop browser with Web Bluetooth (Chrome or Edge; in Brave, enable it at brave://flags/#brave-web-bluetooth-api).
1. Open the Telink flasher, click Connect and pick the sensor. 2. If the page warns about firmware 2.1.1_0159, keep the sensor in Mi Home, get its device id, token and bind key with the Xiaomi cloud tokens extractor, paste them in and click Login. 3. Flash Original_OTA_Xiaomi_…0159c.bin first, then reconnect, log in again and flash ATC_v59.bin (or the newer version the page offers). Flashing the custom firmware directly can leave the display blank; taking the battery out usually brings back Xiaomi's firmware so you can try again. 4. Reconnect to the sensor, now named ATC_…, set Advertising type to PVVX (Custom) with Encrypted beacon off, click Send Config and close the page. SpectraTrace picks it up as Xiaomi (pvvx).
The Hotspot Map isn't loading features, or shows "Fetching features"
The map needs an internet connection the first time it scans a given area; after that, the area is cached on the phone for two weeks and works offline. If it stays on "Fetching features," the public OpenStreetMap and USGS servers may be temporarily busy — move a little or reopen the screen to retry. Location permission (while using the app) has to be granted for the map to centre on you.
Speech to Text shows nothing, or "Speech recognition is unavailable"
Speech to Text needs the Speech Recognition permission (Settings → SpectraTrace) and an internet connection the first time a language is used; Apple downloads the recogniser for the app language. If the language of the room is not the app language, change App language in the app's Settings — the recogniser follows it.
Haptics are off — is that a bug?
No. The vibration motor is a magnet a few centimetres from the magnetometer, so haptics are off by default in M1 and REM to keep the readings clean. Turn them on with the Haptics control when you want them.
Where are my recordings and how do I get them off the phone?
Audio recorded in M1, REM, Spectrum and Frequencies is listed in Audio RePlayer; videos from Spectra Cam are in its Gallery and, if you allowed it, in Photos. Use the share button on any item to AirDrop it, save it to Files or send it. M1 and Frequencies also export the full session as CSV with Export Data.
Does the app tell me whether a place is haunted?
No, and it never will. SpectraTrace records what the phone's sensors and public map data show, and marks events or scores when a rule is met. Deciding what caused an event is your job as the investigator; the guides and the studies they cite explain what each measurement can and cannot support.
How do I delete my data?
Swipe a recording or a REM session to delete it, clear cached Hotspot Map areas in Settings, or delete the app to remove everything at once. Videos saved to Photos stay in Photos. Nothing is stored anywhere else — see the privacy policy.
Reporting a problem
If the app crashed, iOS keeps the report under Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data; look for a file starting with SpectraTrace- and attach it. For a wrong reading, a screenshot of the instrument with the input chips visible is the most useful thing you can send.
